Operating Procedures for Ladle Refining Furnace

The ladle refining furnace (LRF) is a critical piece of metallurgical equipment used to further refine molten steel produced in primary melting furnaces such as electric arc furnaces, open hearth furnaces, or converters. It plays a key role in adjusting the chemical composition and temperature of molten steel, ensuring optimal conditions for continuous casting and rolling processes. As one of the main components in secondary metallurgy, the ladle furnace enables precise control over steel quality.

Standard Operating Procedures for Twin Ladle Furnace


1.Pre-Operation Safety Check
   Before starting any operation, inspect the ladle car’s interlocking safety devices and travel switches to ensure they are functioning properly and reliably.

2.System Inspection
   Examine all mechanical systems including vacuum pumping, oxygen and hydrogen injection, thermal insulation, heating mechanisms, and wire feeding units. Only start the equipment after confirming that all systems are safe and fully operational.

3.Dry Sampling Tools
   Ensure that sampling spoons and molds are completely dry before use to prevent steam explosions when in contact with molten steel.

4.Check Station Tools
   Verify that all tools at the operating station are in good condition and easily accessible for efficient use during the process.

5.Coordinate with Support Units
   Communicate with the power supply department and vacuum control room as required to ensure synchronized operations and system readiness.

6.Safety Warning Before Movement
   Prior to moving the ladle car, sound an alarm bell or activate visual warning signals to alert personnel in the area.

7.High-Voltage Power and Vacuum Process
   Follow established procedures for high-voltage power transmission and initiate vacuum degassing only after all safety checks are completed.

8.Clear Path for Ladle Car
   Always inspect the track before moving the ladle car. Remove any obstructions immediately to prevent accidents or damage.

9.No Entry Under Energized Lines
   Once power is supplied, it is strictly prohibited for personnel to walk or stand beneath high-voltage lines.

10.Safe Handling of Pressure Pipes
    When connecting or disconnecting pressure pipe joints, always close the relevant valves first to avoid accidental release of gas or fluid.

11.Oxygen Use Safety
    During oxygen blowing operations, never place hands in front of the connector (clamp head), and do not wear oil-contaminated gloves, as this may cause fire or explosion.

12.Disposal of Residual Molten Steel
    After sampling, pour any remaining molten steel into a designated dry area to prevent hazards caused by moisture contact.

13.Vacuum Release Precaution
    When breaking the vacuum, no personnel should approach the air inlet nozzle due to the risk of sudden airflow or ejected debris.

14.Maintenance on Heating Bridge
    For inspection or maintenance work on the heating bridge, the operator must remove the high-voltage key and cut off the power supply. The key must remain in the operator's possession during the entire maintenance period.

15.Electrode Replacement Protocol
    During lifting or replacement of electrodes, assign a dedicated signal person to direct operations. Use steel wire ropes to connect lifting rings and hooks, ensure the hook safety latch is engaged, and never lift or replace all three phases simultaneously.

16.Workplace Housekeeping on Furnace Cover and Bridge
    Do not store any objects on the furnace cover or bridge structure. Throwing tools or materials up and down while working at height is strictly forbidden to prevent falling object injuries.
